It's two decades since Aussie soap star Jason Donovan had a worldwide hit with the cheesy pop ballad 'Especially For You', which he sang with his on-screen and real-life girlfriend Kylie Minogue.

He seemed to have the pop world at his feet. But after legal and personal difficulties, the former 'Neighbours' heartthrob turned his back on the pop world and carved out a highly successful career in musical shows.

The former soap actor and popstar is on stage at the Grand Canal Theatre, Dublin, in 'The Sound of Music' all this month with co-star 'Emmerdale' actress Verity Rushworth.

Donovan plays the naval officer widower Captain von Trapp, who has seven children.

Last month Donovan and wife Angela Malloch had their third child, Molly. The couple have two other children, Jemma (10) and Zac (9). But he says there is no chance life will imitate art, and he won't be aiming for a brood of seven kids.

Jason has starred in 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', 'The War of the Worlds', and 'Priscilla: Queen of the Desert' among others -- but he said he never imagined he would have a stage career with such longevity and insisted there was more to his life than the stage.

"I think there are a lot of other things that I can give than just being on stage," he said yesterday.

'The Sound of Music' runs at the Grand Canal Theatre until April 30. Tickets are priced from €25. Details at www.grandcanaltheatre.ie
