Despite her name, young British writer Samantha Shannon does not have Irish connections. Yet the heroine of her debut fantasy novel, The Bone Season, set 40 years in the future in a Britain in which society has collapsed, is an Irish girl called Paige Mahoney.
Asked about this recently, Ms Shannon said: "I've always been interested in Ireland. The novel deals with the history of conflict between England and Ireland (albeit in a fictional future); it made sense to have an Irish protagonist."
The novel by the English student who graduated from Oxford this month is the first in a planned series of seven books, and is tipped to be the next global bestseller on the same scale as Harry Potter.
