IRISH comedian Andrew Maxwell has been shortlisted for the prestigious best comedy show award at this year's Edinburgh festival.
The Dubliner's show, 'The Lights Are On', is one of six on the shortlist. The winner, who receives £10,000, will be announced on Saturday.
Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland this morning, Maxwell said he was delighted. "It's great to get a bit of recognition."
He has been attending the Edinburgh fringe festival for the last 17 years and promised "a proper tearful speech" if he wins.
Maxwell said his show included a lot of material about the riots in the UK, the Arab Spring and the phone-hacking scandal but from an Irish perspective.
The awards, which were formerly known as the Perrier awards, have been running since 1981 and are considered to be the Oscars of the comedy world.
Previous winners have included Tommy Tiernan, Sean Hughes, Dylan Moran, David O'Doherty, Steve Coogan, Rich Hall and Al Murray.
