A NEW professorship at Trinity College Dublin, set up in the name of poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, has been awarded to Chris Morash.

Mr Morash will become the Seamus Heaney Professor in Irish Writing at the college.

The new post was established to commemorate Seamus Heaney's long-standing relationship with Trinity.

Prof Morash was formerly Professor of English at NUI Maynooth, Co Kildare, where he also set up the Centre for Media Studies.

He has published widely on Irish writing.

His new post will be formally announced at a special event in the Long Room in Trinity College on Monday night.

Prof Morash will also launch his new book at the event. He co-authored 'Mapping Irish Theatre: Theories of Space and Place' with Shaun Richards and the book is published by Cambridge University Press.

His new post will involve "enhancing the research culture in the School by attracting research students and funding".

He will also play a leadership role in the school's Oscar Wilde Centre for Irish Writing and develop its links to Irish and international universities and research bodies.
