Get into the festive spirit with Christmas show
WHAT better way to celebrate the start of Christmas than with Irving Berlin's classic White Christmas, which opened in the Grand Canal Theatre in Dublin last Thursday night for a limited run?
This is a stage adaptation of the film, which starred Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby, and it certainly does justice to the memorable music and lyrics of Berlin. It's an all-singing, all-dancing show with superb sets, a blur of red and white costumes, snow and bucketloads of sentimentality. All, of course, topped off by the classic Christmas anthems.
The star of the show is Aled Jones (nearly 30 years ago, he was the unforgettable voice in The Snowman, singing Walking in the Air) and it also features Adam Cooper, Louise Plowright, Ken Farrington and Amy Ellen Richardson.
The younger cast members are absolutely superb. But it's the music and lyrics that evoke the real spirit of Christmas in the songs Happy Holiday, Let Yourself Go, Blue Skies and the finale of I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm.
With a huge cast, superb orchestra and a wonderful setting, this is certainly a show to get Christmas lovers into the mood for the rest of the festive season. There may be a lot of gloom around, but inside the Grand Canal Theatre all is going to be merry and bright this Christmas.
It opened on Thursday and runs at the Grand Canal Theatre until December 17.
