IT has already been given the seal of approval by Oscar-winner Meryl Streep and now Irish author Colm Toibin's 'The Testament of Mary' has received a Tony award nomination,
The Broadway production of his 2012 book of the same name opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre only last week.
With actress Fiona Shaw in the title role, it tells the story of Jesus from his mother Mary's contrary point of view.
Last night, Wexford writer Toibin told the Irish Independent of his delight to be shortlisted for Best Play at this year's Tony Awards.
"It was a bit of surprise to be honest, I really didn't know if I would get a nomination," he said.
"The audience reaction to it has been wonderful, but you can never judge these things," he added.
Among the many Hollywood faces to enjoy the play so far are Sienna Miller, Ralph Fiennes and silver screen veteran Meryl Streep.
"There was a real excitement when she came backstage, she was exceptionally nice and said she loved the performance.
"I'm just in the shadows, I'm just the writer, but when you come from Enniscorthy and that happens, it's really wonderful," he said.
Toibin, who is currently working on his next novel, said that he's hopeful his relationship with theatre will continue to grow.
The 2013 Tony Awards take place on June 9.
