A SIMPLE photo of his son Calum's much-loved teddy Peter Rabbit led photographer Mark Nixon to take more than 60 photos of battered and bruised teddies.
Now the huge collection is hitting the shelves in book format in the US. Entitled 'Much Loved' it is a tribute to the stitched-up, the over-stuffed and the worn-out teddies of the world.
Mr Nixon explains how the project took off: "I noticed how much Calum loved his teddy, squeezing him and shoving him in his face that I just wanted to capture that."
One of the bears was contributed by Bono and his wife, Ali Hewson, a bear belonging to a late friend. And One-Eyed Ted, or Aloysius, the late Gerry Ryan's bear is featured on the back of the book. There is still a trace of the late presenter's mother's lipstick on his mouth. He is now being cared for by Gerry's daughter, Babette.
It was an interview with Tom Dunne on Newstalk that led to people calling on Mr Nixon's Clontarf studio in North Dublin with their beloved teddies. He was then contacted by a US publishing house, which offered him a five-figure book deal. 'Much Loved', will be published by Abrams and Chronicle Books in the US in November and will be available in Ireland in the coming weeks.
