Love/Hate heartthrob joins Keith Duffy's son Jay for new play

Aaron Heffernan plays a detective in Love/Hate

Love/ Hate heart throb Aaron Heffernan - aka sexy detective Gavin Brogan - and Laurence Kinlan (Elmo) are teaming up with everyone’s favorite red head; Domhnall Gleeson for the Abbey Theatre’s annual fundraiser ‘The 24 Hour Plays’.

The show, which takes place on March 2, sees a group of 24 actors, six playwrights and six directors devise, write, rehearse and stage a series of six short plays over the course of a very hectic 24 hours.

Boyzone’s Keith Duffy took part in the show in 2013 and this year his son Jay is picking up the mantle. He may still be in his teens but Jay is clocking up the acting credentials having starred in ‘Hollyoaks’ and ‘Vikings’.

Bewley’s heiress Kelly Campbell, ‘Fair City’ stars Hilda Fay and Aoibheann McCaul, and ‘Raw’ actor Paul Reid will also tread the boards at this year’s event.

Cabaret singer Camille O’Sullivan will perform a sensual set during the night while renowned theatre makers Tom Creed, Peter Daly and Lynne Parker will direct.

Now in its third year, the show has become something of a ‘rite of passage’ for members of the Irish theatre scene, according to writer and organizer Philip McMahon.

“It’s creative chaos,” McMahon told the Irish Independent. “Everyone meets up at 8pm on Saturday night and introduces themselves.”

“Then it's lockdown for the writers. They have to cast their plays, barter for actors and write a play all before 6am the following morning.”

The 24 Hour Plays originated in New York in the mid-90s and is now an annual gala benefit on Broadway, as well as at the Old Vic in London, with performances in Chicago, Athens and around the world.

‘The 24 Hour Plays’ will raise money for Dublin Youth Theatre which celebrates its 37th anniversary in 2014.

“A huge amount of incredibly talented people have come out of DYT,” McMahon said. “Aidan Gillen, Brendan Courtney and Enda Walsh – it’s important to keep it thriving.”
