A photographic society has achieved global acclaim, reaching the highest level ever for an Irish body in a major amateur competition.

The Dundalk Photographic Society took 11th place in the annual event run by French group FIAP, the International Federation of Photographic Art.

Eleven photographers from the group, all amateurs, put forward 20 entries, which secured the coveted placing -- the highest an Irish society has ever achieved. Among the entries was 'A Winter's Walk' by Dave Martin, and 'Into the Mist' by Denis Whelehan.

"It is fabulous. It is the highest ever for any Irish club," said secretary Brian Hopper.

"No one has ever achieved that position."

"Last year, we entered a competition in the United Arab Emirates and we got sixth place in the world but it wasn't as representative as the FIAP -- that is the real top competition counter,"

Dundalk photographic society is celebrating its 30th year.
