A sad, eerie quiet hangs over great swathes of middle-class Dublin. With everybody under 50 priced out of the housing market, neighbourhoods which -- generations ago -- teemed with families, are silent and a bit forlorn.
Whether that's good or bad news for establishments such as Coman's is unclear. The fact that only those in late middle age or older can afford to live within ambling distance hardly spells bonanza time. On the other hand, this isn't the 70s, so it's not as if harried mums or dads can slip away to the pub when it all gets too much, anyway.
A super-pub of Celtic Tiger vintage, Coman's features acres of moulded leather banquettes, a swanky carvery bar and a Norwegian wood's worth of varnished pine. At one end, it's all a bit Starship Enterprise with an achingly minimalist fireplace and crescent-shaped uber-couch apparently beamed in from the year 2040.
The entertainment, however, is decidedly old-school: televised sport is advertised six evenings a week, with Thursdays reserved for 'super quiz night'. An adjoining off-licence, meanwhile, caters for those who'd rather curl up with a nice game of Trivial Pursuit at home.
