The most-subscribed to creator on YouTube has spoken out to defend the launch of YouTube Red.
Pewdiepie (real name Felix Kjellberg) took to Tumblr to defend YouTube Red, YouTube's new subscription-based service.
The service will be $9.99 a month for users who wish to watch YouTube ad-free, and those already signed up to Google Play Live will recieve YouTube Red subscription as part of their existing $9.99 deal, at no extra cost.
Pewdiepie has come under fire for being announced as one of the creators chosen to create content that will only be available to YouTube Red susbcribers - on top of his existing content.
Pewdiepie wrote that YouTubers lose up to "40 per cent of their ad income" due to people using Adblock.
While the star, who reportedly earned seven million on YouTube last year, says he is "ok with you if you use Adblock", he notes that "for smaller channels, (40 per cent) can be devastating".
"I think what many people still don’t realize is that YouTube Red exists largely as an effort to counter Adblock".
He added that YouTube Red exists "because using Adblock has actual consequences" for creators.
