A woman in Argentina died after she reportedly injected herself with Vaseline in an attempt to enhance her breasts.

The 39-year-old suffered a blood clot in her lungs after she tried to carry out a breast augmentation with the petroleum jelly.

Sonia Perez Llanzon suffered the clot called a pulmonary embolism and died several weeks after injecting herself according to a Huffington Post translation of La Capital.

The Argentine newspaper reported on March 18 that Llanzon went to a Santa Rosa hospital after she experienced difficulty breathing.

Doctors said she initially denied trying to carry out the procedure but later admitted that she had tried to give herself a breast augmentation.

‘‘In all my medical career, I've never seen a case like this. The human body has antibodies to remove bacteria and viruses, but it hasn't got any mechanisms against this type of product," Julio Pla Cardenas, chief of surgery at Lucio Molas Hospital in Santa Rosa said, according to Argentine website Sipse.com.

The doctor said the Vaseline entered the woman's blood stream, causing blood clots that eventually travelled to her lungs.

The woman died after a month-long stay at hospital where doctors tried to save her.

A Facebook post by her son, Kevin Berazategui, indicates that Llanzon died on March 6.

"It has been two days since you haven't been here in this world... I will love you forever. The 20 years I spent by your side were beautiful," Berazategui wrote in a Facebook post dated March 8, according to a Huffington Post translation.

‘‘I'm going to live my life as a demonstration of your efforts as a fighter, as my lion-hearted mother,’’ he wrote.

His mother was said to be an athlete, a marathon runner and a boxer.
