A secret love note penned by a husband to his wife has touched internet hearts months after the man behind it passed away.

Becca lost her husband back in February but was left a touching message to remember him by underneath her favourite workbench.

The beautiful message was only discovered months after he passed away by his son who shared the story online, with the photo racking up more than 900,000 views.

“My dad passed away on February 26 at the age of 51 from a ruptured artery. He made this workbench for my mum when she got into metal engraving,” he explained.

The note reads:

"I love you Becca. Whatever day this is, I hope it's a good one. God truly answered my prayers the day he gave me you.

“I know that these days are the best I'll ever have, and I'm glad you're in them. I'm not sure if you'll ever see this, but if you do, just know that I love you very much.

“If there is one thing want in life, it is to be as good to you as you are to me. If I can do that, I'll be the happiest man alive. - I love you beautiful wife.”

His son said he hoped his father’s message would live on, adding: “Thanks for the love guys. You don't have to send me anything. I only ask that you love one another so there can be peace. Leave the world better than you found it.”

Many comments praised the note:

"This. This is romance. This is what being romantic is. Because he could never have known if she'd see it. But he knew. He took the time."

"This is bliss. I'm very much this same way. This is how I believe it should be. Your dad seemed like a great man."

"Your late father just won the teary-eyed respect of thousands of strangers today. Including mine."
