Planking was cool in 2010, we had the Ice Bucket Challenge two years ago and now Mannequin Challenge videos are sweeping the web.

What is the Mannequin Challenge?

The Mannequin Challenge is a viral video craze featuring people imitating mannequins and freezing for the camera while music playing in the background. Many people are sharing videos using the hashtag #MannequinChallenge.

The music heard playing in the background of most clips is Rae Sremmurd’s Black Beatles featuring Gucci Mane.

At a concert in Denver, the American hip hop duo acknowledged the challenge by telling the audience to remain completely still as they recorded their own #MannequinChallenge.

Where did the Mannequin Challenge start?

Teenagers in the United States began performing the Mannequin Challenge in high schools in last month, the clip below was one of the first posted.

The craze has gone viral since the start of November and now thousands have posted their own videos online.

But will it be as big as the Ice Bucket Challenge? Well, all that water may have just made a real difference with some of the viral challenge donations helping fund a breakthrough in research into Motor Neurone Disease (ALS).

Researchers have just discovered a new gene associated with the disease and experts are hopeful it could lead to new treatments in future.

Brian Dickie, Director of Research Development at the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association said: “We are pleased to have been involved since this approach to gene hunting was in its infancy a decade ago.

“It’s so encouraging to see how the collaboration, catalysed by Project MinE, has grown and is now delivering results that will open up new avenues of research across the world.”

Earlier this year, the Power of Make-up challenge, which involves social media users sharing selfies that show half their face covered in makeup, went viral.

While a photo project capturing how faces change after one, two and three glasses of wine has also been shared around the world.
