A commuter on a Beijing train filmed the moment a man popped the question to his boyfriend on the subway.

While same-sex ceremonies are not legal in China, the warm reception that this footage received online suggests that the country is moving towards a more liberal stance.

Homosexuality was only legalised in the country in 1997, only 18 years ago.

Fellow passengers showed their happiness at the romantic gesture by smiling warmly.

The video was then shared on Weibo, the Chinese version of Facebook.

One woman tweeted: "You should admire their courage."

Another commented: "Everyone has the right to the pursuit of love."

Inevitable some Weibo users were negative in their remarks, referring to the footage as "disgusting."
