'There's always someone who's been there' - Kind stranger comes to the rescue of tearful college student
A university student was incredibly touched when a kind stranger presented her with £20 (€28) to pay for a visit to her doctor.
Charlotte Rose Ford from Manchester was sitting in a café, speaking to her counselor on the phone.
She was trying to arrange an appointment with her counselor in order to get a letter to cover her for missed college work.
"It wasn’t a particularly fun phone call, and I got a bit emotional whilst I was explaining to the counselor what I wanted to see them for," Charlotte Rose wrote in a Facebook post.
"‘At one point I mentioned the fact that I needed a letter for a mitigating circumstances form, and that I’d been to the doctor but they would charge me £20 for it, which is money I can’t always spare.’
Mitigating circumstances are classed as serious unforeseen circumstances that significantly disrupt student performance in assessment.
However the discussion became too much for Charlotte Rose to handle and she hung up the phone.
She began texting her friends, when suddenly someone approached her and put a cup of coffee in front of her.
"This is for you, someone sent it over," the person said.
Charlotte Rose revealed that she found a note tucked inside the cup sleeve.
"I was so overwhelmed by it.
"The note reads:
I hope you don’t mind that I overheard.
Just wanted to say, don’t worry! I’ve been there. I thought I wouldn’t get through my undergrad – and now I’m doing a PhD!
This is for the doctor’s note. You’ll get through it!
"The note was accompanied by two £10 notes," Charlotte Rose wrote.
Charlotte Rose wrote that she sometimes struggles to get her work done to a standard she is happy with due to mental health issues.
"Or I miss deadlines because I’m too distracted by my low mood, or I’m too anxious that my work isn’t good enough – so I have to ask for mitigating circumstances.’
Charlotte Rose concludes her post by saying:
"I don’t know who it was that sent it to me but if they read this I want to thank them so much, because they completely made my day and made me feel so much better.
"As well as making me completely baffled by how kind strangers can be! I just hope I can find a good way of passing it on.’
She said that in her opinion the kind stranger's actions demonstrated two valuable life lessons:
- You’re really not on your own no matter how much you might think so, because there’s always someone who’s been there.
- The world actually is such a lovely place sometimes and that there are people full of kindness!
Her post has gone viral, with nearly 5,000 shares.
