Olympics commentator Ger Owens couldn't contain his excitement as Ireland's Annalise Murphy raced towards to the finish line to claim the silver medal at the women's Laser Radial at the Rio Olympics.

"That medal is not made of silver," he exclaimed as the Dublin sailor looked ready to claim second place, "...that medal is made of blood and guts!".

He continued: "They'll be writing poems about her, translate them into Irish and teach them for the Leaving Cert!".

Many took to Twitter, quoting the bizarre comments.

However, some social media users were quick to criticise, describing the comments as "infuriating".

Another wrote on Twitter: "Delighted for @Annalise_Murphy, but that RTE commentator would put anyone off sailing for life #Rio2016."
