Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is a prolific user of Twitter, so he shouldn’t be surprised at some of the tweets during his Q&A today.

Ferdinand has a large following on the social media network and uses it regularly to push business interests.

Today he decided to host a Twitter Q&A with the hashtag '#AskRio' trending all day after this morning's online session.

While many of the questions were genuine, he was also subjected to more light-hearted, and in some case cases abusive tweets.

Former Liverpool player Stewart Downing was forced to call a halt to a similar event on Twitter last year because of the nature of the comments and it is a common feature among public figures.
