Gwyneth Paltrow's guide to fast-food: 'curly fries are best enjoyed with reckless abandon'

Parents who dread their children asking to be taken to junk food restaurants over the Easter holidays have been offered a lifeline by clean-eating expert Gwyneth Paltrow.

The actress and lifestyle guru’s blog Goop has produced a round-up of the healthiest options available in fast food eateries.

McDonalds, Starbucks, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Subway and Domino’s were all found to have healthy options or choices which could be modified.

The website states: “Summer’s (almost) here, which means the next family trip is just around the corner.

“And while here at Goop, we do our best to keep things clean and healthy, we’re also realists who know that sometimes, especially when it’s airline-terminal-adjacent, right off the next highway exit, or at your kid’s all-day competition we’re going to eat fast food.”

At Starbucks diners were advised to opt for the Hearty Veggie & Brown Rice Salad Bowl, while parents were told to treat Subway ‘as a salad bar’ at which to stock up on lettuce, spinach, peppers, cucumbers, olive, onion, tomato, carved turkey, and avocado.

At McDonalds, children would be safest eating a lettuce-wrapped grilled chicken burger with a side of apple slices, according to the website.

Likewise, a thin veggie pizza, without cheese and with a gluten-free crust is the best option at Domino’s while at Kentucky Fried Chicken, they advise ditching the chicken altogether and making do with sides such as sweetcorn, coleslaw and mashed potato without gravy.

However even clean eaters like the Goop team said they were unable to resist certain treats. Curly fries are ‘best enjoyed with reckless abandon’ they state, while they acknowledge that donuts are ‘hard to pass up.’

“The marginal nutritional benefit might be outweighed by the delight of simply indulging in something you really want,” they conclude.

It's not the first time that Gwyneth has suggested ditching clean eating. In an article she penned for The Telegraph in 2013, the actress admitted to occasionally cheating on her diet and encouraged others to do the same.

"Stay away from processed foods, though cutting them out completely is no fun and can ultimately lead to a binge," Gwyneth wrote.

"Allow yourself programmed treats—I often have a glass of red wine in the evening and smoke a cigarette on a Saturday."
