The story of a 40-year-old chimp named Foxie may just break your heart.

Foxie was used for laboratory research on hepatitis vaccines and was forced to reproduce for research.

All four of Foxie’s babies were taken away from her as soon as they were born, leaving her heartbroken and cautious of humans.

However, Foxie was taken to Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest, Washington, eight years ago and things have started to look up.

Despite being apprehensive of her surroundings at first, Foxie has taken to the sanctuary and “adopted” several toy dolls, particularly trolls, as her babies.

She carries the dolls on her back, sleeps with them and takes them around wherever she goes.

“Foxie is still so intensely enamoured with these strange little dolls that she carries one everywhere,” staff member Diana Goodrich wrote on the sanctuary’s Facebook page.

“Today, she lay down to rest in the playroom and spent several minutes gazing at her doll before closing her eyes.”
