Star's shock departure forces comedy group to rewrite play

A GAA comedy play is getting a last-minute rewrite to incorporate the shock decision of Lar Corbett to quit hurling.

Featuring Micheal O Muircheartaigh as narrator, 'The All Star Wars' tells the story of junior B hurler Hugh Cullen. He is whisked off into the future by a wise sage called Obi Wan Camogie to save the future of hurling from evil King Henry of the Shefflin Order.

However, co-writer Kevin McCormack likened Mr Corbett's departure from Tipperary to an 'I, Keano' moment.

"This will absolutely be part of our show, but like everyone else, we're so shocked by the news, we haven't quite got our heads together yet on how we're going to get it into our plot," said Mr McCormack, who also plays the lead role.

But co-star Richie Hayes, who appears as Clare legend Davy Fitzgerald, said any reference to Mr Corbett would be respectful.

"How could it be any other way for players like Lar and the commitment they make to the game?"

'The All Star Wars' runs at the Olympia, Dublin, until Sunday.
