RENOWNED director Garry Hynes heads a cast of leading theatre figures who will help shape the next generation of dramatic performers.

A new partnership will see theatrical groups, including the Druid Theatre Company, Galway Arts Festival and Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe, bring their expertise to students undertaking a new course in performance studies at NUI Galway (NUIG).

The four-year BA in Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies, will see students attend lectures, seminars, practical workshops, performances and internships.

The seminars will involve acting and directing, while the workshops and internships will be with professional theatre companies and arts organisations.

The first intake of students -- through the CAO process -- will begin next September.

Meanwhile, up to 400 construction jobs are being created in the re-start of a €75m building programme at NUIG which had stalled due to the economic downturn.

The project began in 2010 but ran into trouble in November of that year when a receiver was appointed to the original contractor, Michael McNamara and Co, the family company headed up by property developer, Bernard McNamara.

Work halted immediately on the project, which included the construction of three research blocks. NUIG subsequently advertised for tenders for the completion of the blocks and for two additional construction jobs; extensions to the Arts Millennium building and to the student bank block on campus.

Yesterday the university confirmed that Galway-based construction company, JJ Rhatigan and Co had won the contract to build all but one of the new buildings.
