Never ones to sit on the fence, the RTE World Cup panel were at their brutal best last night when they suggested that England need to become ‘granny killers” to succeed.

Roy Hodgson’s side were defeated 2-1 by Uruguay in Sao Paulo, with a brace from Luis Suarez leaving England’s World Cup hopes hanging by a mathematical thread.

Suarez of course is no shrinking violet, while Alvaro Perreira demonstrated his battling qualities when he refused to come off the pitch after taking an accidental knee to the head following a clash with Daniel Sturridge.

John Giles explained in the Montrose studios that England need a tougher streak, a stronger mentality to succeed in major tournaments, with the “granny killing” quip quickly trending on social media.

Soon after Stephen Ireland was also trending die to his well-publicised excuses for leaving the Irish international camp when he claimed his grandmother had passed away.
