British man Adam Walker was swimming the Cook Strait, between the North and South islands of New Zealand, when he was joined by a pod of up to ten dolphins.

Walker believes the dolphins were protecting him from sharks in the open sea.

He crossed the famous 16-mile strait in eight hours and 36 minutes – of which the dolphins stayed with him for more than an hour.

“Yesterday I swam the 6th of the ’oceans seven’ swims ’Cook Strait’ in 8 hours 36 mins,” he said yesterday.

“But that doesn’t tell the whole story rolling waves, big currents but more important than that a dream come true swimming with dolphins over an hour!!

“I’d like to think they were protecting me and guiding me home!!! This swim will stay with me forever,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Walker has already swam the Cook Strait, English Channel, Strait of Gibraltar, Molokai Channel off the coast of Hawaii, Catalina Channel off California and Japan’s Tsugaru Channel.

It is only the Irish Channel that remains before he has completed his feat.

Walker wants to follow in the footsteps of only four other people worldwide who have completed the Oceans Seven challenge, one of whom is Irishman Steven Redmond.

The West Cork man, amateur swimmer and dad-of-two  celebrated his completion of the challenge in July of 2012 at the age of 47.
