As we near the end of the year, we reflect on the most popular video clips watched on Independent.ie over the last 12 months.

10) Donal Walsh: My struggle with cancer

An inspirational video from the terminally ill teenager Donal Walsh made its way into our top ten with over 38,000 views.

Accompanied by a Mumford & Sons song, this video from Donal himself shows how he battled since his diagnosis.

A profound quote from the courageous youth: "I see God has given me this challenge. I may be used as a symbol for other people to appreciate life more.”

“So as long as I find peace over the next weeks and contentment in my life I will be happy. From the start I wasn't going to spend my days at home moaning about 'it's coming soon'.

9) Naked French weather girl

Model-turned-weathergirl Doria Tillier surprised viewers by following through with her promise to present the weather report in the nude if France qualified for the World Cup.

Ms Tillier vowed that she would present her Canal+ forecast 'à poil' – French for naked – if the France national football team managed to qualify for the World Cup finals.

True to her word, she presented the weather in just a pair of boots from a long camera distance camera shot, while running around a field in Poil, which is also a village in eastern France.

This short clip racked up almost 40,000 views when it was posted to the site.

8) How to kill a false widow spider

The apparent spread of false widow spiders across Ireland sparked fear into the hearts of the nation earlier this year.

But this – somewhat overzealous – clip wasn’t the answer for many of the 41,000 who viewed it.

Nonetheless, the well-watched footage made its way into our top ten of the videos for 2013.

A bit of useful knowledge however: The bite of the false widow spider can be 'medically significant' in humans, but usually without long-lasting effects.

7) Ohio woman attacks drive-thru attendant

A recorded spat over a portion of chick McNuggets caused such a viral sensation that it holds a firm position in our top ten list of 2013 with almost 45,000 views.

According to a police report, Melodi Dushane became outraged and punched the drive-thru assistant when she found out that they were not serving McNuggets at 6.30am on New Year's Day.

The security camera captured the altercation, which included the woman punching the window and attempting to climb in the window, shouting "I am going to end you!"

Dushane claimed she was drunk at the time of the incident and received a 60-days jail sentence for her outburst.

6) Donal Walsh on Kerry Today

48,000 people viewed terminally ill teenager Donal Walsh speaking of his wish that his death would make people appreciate life more.

The brave young boy made his plea on Kerry Today – and the broadcast made an impact with the nation.

At the age of 16, the three-times cancer sufferer knew he was going to die, but he was determined to embrace life -- and urged others to do so also.

In the space of two months, the eloquent Kerry teenager Donal Walsh became a household name across the country.

5) Michaella McCollum Connolly and Melissa Reid inside their Peruvian jail

Recently sentenced Irishwoman Michaella McCollum Connolly(20) and her friend Melissa Reid(19) were accused of attempting to smuggle €1.7m of cocaine between Peru and Spain.

50,000 people watched this footage, where the girls speak to media from behind bars and appear calm and composed.

McCollum and Reid initially claimed they were kidnapped, held at gunpoint and forced to board a flight from Lima to Spain with 24lb of cocaine in food packets hidden inside their luggage when they were arrested.

The Peruvian court remained unconvinced by the story and the pair were sentenced to six years and eight months earlier this month.

4) Bloody scenes in Dublin’s Talbot St

This altercation happened to take place next door to the Irish Independent newsroom.

Within minutes, tens of journalists gathered outside the SuperValu supermarket to find out what had occurred, and 70,000 people watched on the Independent.ie website.

Witnesses said there had been an argument between two men and security guards in the shop prior to the physical confrontation.

This clip shows a pool of blood left on the street following the incident.

3) 'Lapgate' in the Dail

Yes. It’s the video that prompted #lapgate to trend on Twitter.

A silly moment that allowed the Irish population to bash the country’s politicians for their inadequacies yet again.

On the night in question, when the controversial Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill was debated TDs and senators drank significantly more pints than normal in the Dail bar.

The night in July was dubbed 'lapgate' after Fine Gael TD Tom Barry was captured on the Dail TV cameras pulling party colleague Aine Collins on to his lap at 2.40am.

Within an hour, the incident – which Fine Gael sources later described as "horseplay" – had gone viral on the internet. 72,000 people viewed this on Independent.ie.

2) Miley Cyrus 2013 VMA performance

Perhaps once of the most globally recognised – and memorable – videos of the year comes from the young popstar Miley Cyrus. For all the wrong reasons.

Surrounded by dancing teddy bears, the 20-year-old entertained at the annual MTV Video Music Awards with a stage attempt at her record-breaking ‘We Can’t Stop’ video.

Attempting to channel Thicke’s censored ‘Blurred Lines’ video, Miley was deemed wholly inappropriate as she ran up and down towards the 36-year-old on stage, seemingly delighted to be part of it all.

But it was a different story for her fellow VMA-attending celebrities and nd a large portion of the programme’s viewers. Over 80,000 people watched this clip in the aftermath of the performance.

1) RTE presenter touching up

Topping the list, this clip of RTÉ newsreader Aengus MacGrianna powdering his nose has become iconic in the few months since it went viral, with well over 100,00 views.

The footage, which shows MacGrianna readying himself for the small screen, gained worldwide attention and has made the Dubliner a celebrity in his own right.

Obviously unaware the broadcast has gone live, the presenter dabs his face with makeup, straightens his tie and dusts off his jacket.

The hilarity ends with an exclamation of ‘What?!’ from MacGrianna, as it seemingly realises the error.
