'I died today' photoset captures dog's last day on earth

"And I ate a lot of hamburgers. We had a party."
"And I laughed."
"Always, Dukey."

A photographer has gone viral for a blogpost detailing the final day of a black labrador who had to be put down.

Robyn Arouty Photography's photoset "I Died Today" by Duke Roberts chronicles the last day on earth of a beloved family dog.

It shows 'Dukey' being cuddled and taken for one last play 'in the water' before going for his final nap on a picnic blanket in his favourite park.

Robyn Arouty, who has been photographing people and their pets for the last five years, describes the relationship between pet and owner as "one of the most powerful connections I have witnessed...  I am fortunate to be able to capture these moments".

Over 100,000 people viewed the blogpost 'I died today' and the blog was so shared, it crashed Arouty's website.

Following the worldwide interest in Dukey's story, Arouty asked his owner, Jordan Roberts, to tell Dukey's story.

She wrote that Dukey " joined our family when we were expecting our first child" but that shortly after her first birthday, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. He had to have his leg amputated, and underwent chemotherapy.  His treatment was initially a success but "just after baby number two", he was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma.

Dukey became very uncomfortable as his tumour grew, and the family decided to "let him go... to protect him from further pain".

In her email to Arouty, she added "This is so hard to do right now... I have so much to say about him and our lives together."

Arouty is also the photographer behind 'Pocketshots', an "all day portrait photography event" that has raised over $50,000 for animal welfare organisations in the last four years.
