LECTURERS in Institutes of Technology are only teaching 480 hours out of the 560 they are contracted to -- and are paid extra to correct their exam papers.
In ITs, they are generally working a 16-hour teaching week. Fianna Fail TD Brendan Keneally said this was "extraordinary".
"These lecturers are paid extra for correcting papers on top of the few hours they work," he said.
But Teachers' Union of Ireland general secretary Peter MacMenamin said lecturers' contracts listed 19 other duties in addition to teaching such as research, mentoring and assessing students and that 16 hours' teaching was high by international standards.
