William Hill, the UK’s largest bookmaker by number of outlets, said more than £2bn (€2.4bn) will probably be bet in June and July, driven by the busiest ever sporting schedule.
The World Cup in South Africa, starting on June 11, should attract gambling of more than £1bn on all the individual matches, the bookmaker said today in a statement.
Five days of horse racing at Royal Ascot from June 15-19 will generate another £500m while the remaining wagers will come from the Wimbledon tennis tournament, the Epsom Derby, the British Open golf tournament in July, British Grand Prix formula one motor racing at Silverstone and cricket matches against Pakistan and Australia.
