Christine Lagarde, France's finance minister, speaks with Pranab Mukherjee, India's finance minister, ahead of their meeting in New Delhi, India, yesterday.
India has not given any assurance on supporting Lagarde's candidature to head the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mukherjee said. India and other developing nations have called for an end to the convention that requires the IMF head to be from Europe. However, they have not come together with a common candidate to head the fund. So far Mexican Central Bank governor Agustin Carstens and Lagarde are the only two declared candidates to replace Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
