US retail sales recorded their largest gain in five months in February as consumers bought more cars despite higher petrol costs.
Total retail sales increased 1.1pc, the Commerce Department said - economists had forecast a 1pc rise.
The figures were buoyed by strong car sales and growing confidence as job creation speeded up and supported consumer spending.
Excluding cars, retail sales advanced 0.9pc last month, adding to January's upwardly revised 1.1pc gain.
