Elan wins damages over breach of cancer drug patent

A unit of drug maker Elan won $55.2m in damages when a federal jury decided rival, Abraxis BioScience Inc, infringed a US patent for medicine used to fight breast cancer.

The jury deliberated for 12 hours after an eight-day trial in Delaware. It also decided the patent is valid and enforceable.

Meanwhile, hopes are mounting for an experimental Alzheimer's drug from Elan and American partner Wyeth, but the nature of the tests means clinical data due this month may provide little clarity on its sales potential.

The Phase II update on antibody medicine bapineuzumab is perhaps the year's most keenly awaited biotech trial result .
