READERS of the Chicago Tribune website looking for breaking news this week were in for a bit of a shock.

Instead of the usual lead and splash image on the home page, there was a picture of a kitten with a placeholder headline and the word test written over and over again.

Cleary a mistake, the Tribune social media manager Amy Guth proved to be a sport and told website Gizmodo.com how the kitten appeared on the home page.

She said the ‘unsanctioned cat’ appeared instead of a story about the funeral of Chicago actor Dennis Farina and  a number of other worthy ones.

However, it would appear that a rogue journalist was not responsible for the error which appeared on the site for a few minutes and was desked following a testing session.

It has emerge that the cat Benton, which is now very popular, is up for adoption.
