A little bigger than the size of a CD in diameter, the Drop is made of polished polymer coated with a rubber-like material. It uses a digital sensor to record the weight which, according to Harris, is accurate to "within half a gram".

The system is designed to work wirelessly (over Bluetooth) with an iPad or iPhone, using a free recipe app with details of 500 sweet and savoury recipes. (The app features seven-second videos of various stages of the cooking process for newcomers to preparation of the dish.) The key to the way the system works is that it can adapt to changes in portions or gaps in ingredients. For example, if you're making a cake and lack the menu-specified specified buttermilk, it will suggest specific alternatives that will do. If you have 50 grams too little of one ingredient, it will automatically adjust the others to synchronise. It also encourages you to use just one bowl, prompting each additional ingredient as you need it. Finally, its long-life replaceable battery lasts for three years. It's currently avauilable for €72 with free delivery on pre-order at drop.com.
