Vodafone loses mobile customers but adds broadband, TV subscriptions
Vodafone lost 19,000 mobile customers in Ireland between April and June of this year but added 8,000 fixed broadband customers in the same period and increased its service revenue by 2.8pc.
According to its most recently filed accounts, the country’s biggest mobile operators shed 30,000 prepay customers in the second quarter of 2016, as increased competition from new operators continued to bite. Overall, Vodafone has lost over 89,000 prepay users in the last year while it gained 35,000 contract customers.
The telecom giant gained 11,000 contract mobile customers in the second quarter of this year, mitigating the prepay losses. Contract mobile customers typically pay almost twice as much per connection as prepay users. And Vodafone added an undisclosed number of television customers to keep its overall customer base almost unchanged, at 2.2m.
A spokesman for the company said that Vodafone will invest €550m in Ireland over the next three years across a range of activities. She also said that €200M has recently been invested in the company’s “Project Spring” to “significantly enhance call and text reliability”.
“We continue to see positive returns on our ongoing investment in Ireland,” said Vodafone chief executive Anne O’Leary. “Our move to a fully-converged offering has given customers more choice and we continue to see significant interest in customers choosing Vodafone to meet their total communications needs across both consumer and business.”
