Virgin is "aware" of a "Netflix issue" that is causing its broadband subscribers to suffer interrupted service of the online streaming site.

"We are aware of this and are conducting an investigation about the issue right now," said the company.

Several Virgin broadband subscribers are complaining about a recent fall-off in streaming for Netflix movies and programmes. The issue appears to have been confirmed by Netflix's most recent ISP index ratings for Ireland, which show a sharp fall in Virgin speeds using the service.

However, Virgin says that the main issue resides with Netflix.

"Netflix uses specific routes and there seems to be an issue with the route Netflix uses to stream HD to Virgin Media customers," said the company. "We are working with Netflix to restore best service here but we will not guarantee service on Netflix as the streams are out of our control."

Asked when the issue would be resolved, the company said that it hoped to have it fixed "shortly" but could but could not specify a timeframe.

"The IT and engineering team is already working 24/7 to resolve this issue as soon as possible."
