Too much technology is bad for babies
PARENTS are endangering the development of their infant children by exposing them to too much technology, an expert has warned.
Teresa Heeney, from Early Childhood Ireland, has said that the overuse of smartphones and tablets with children "is one of the biggest challenges for families in Ireland today".
Ms Heeney was speaking after comments by a British child psychologist last week, who said parents were endangering their children's development by leaving them with little "face-to-face interaction".
"In the first 36 months of life, and in particular in the first 12 months, a child's development is really shaped by their relationship with the people around them," Ms Heeney explained.
She said that it was important for parents and primary carers to lead by good example as "children naturally will copy what they see at home".
"So if we, as adults, are spending a lot of time on our phones or tablets, then children will do the same."
Early Childhood Ireland will hold a conference in Croke Park on April 5.
