Tech Insider: The solid Vodafone Smart Turbo 4
Published 18/07/2014 | 02:30
After a string of successful "own brand" devices over the last number of years, Vodafone have launched their first 4G smartphone for Pay As You Go customers. The Vodafone Smart Turbo 4 is first and foremost a budget device, priced at €99.99. It's important to flag that from the outset, as the price almost always impacts performance.
Externally, it looks like any other budget-to-mid range Android device. It feels more sturdy and solid than previous "own brand" phones by Vodafone. The Vodafone Smart and Smart 2 had a bit of a Fisher Price vibe going on.
Beneath the 4.5 inch screen is a 1.2 GHz quad core processor, 1GB of RAM and a microSD slot, allowing users to cram more music, movies and photos on to the device.
The camera is nothing to write home about. The main camera is a mere 5MP and the front camera is just VGA. The phone does have a flash and a decent zoom, however, which redeems it slightly.
While it's by no means a powerhouse, the small device runs Android 4.4, KitKat.
There is a slight drag when swiping across the Turbo 4's screen and apps need a second or two to open and perform.
When purchased on the Vodafone Red PAYG bundle, users can get the phone with €30 of credit giving them access to unlimited calls and texts as well as 1GB of data. As the name indicates, it's 4G enabled.
Overall – it's a grand phone for the price. There are better devices within this price bracket, such as the Nokia 635 featured in last week's column, but if it's a solid device for calls and texts you're after, it's worth a look.
