Traffic lights prevent people from wandering onto tracks

The city of Augsburg has built ground-based traffic lights to help prevent people from wandering onto tram tracks when distracted by their phone.

Officials in Augsburg in the Bavaria region have implemented ground-based traffic lights at two tram stops to stop people glued to their handsets from wandering onto the tracks.

The Local reports that the lights flash red when a tram is approaching or when the normal lights turn red. They’re on the ground, so people looking down at smartphones will catch a glimpse of the warning on trams arriving.

Tobias Harms from the city's council told reporters, “We realised that the normal traffic light isn’t in the line of sight of many pedestrians these days. So we decided to have an additional set of lights — the more we have, the more people are likely to notice them.”
