The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is out and we've been getting some hands on time with the new device.

The most striking feature is definitely the 5.5 inch display which is also the world's first 4K screen on a smartphone. With a resolution of 3840 x 2160 that measures out to 806 pixels per inch. When you consider the screen on the iPhone 6S has a ppi of 326 you can just imagine how good this looks. Details are incredibly crisp and you'll never see any kind of rough edges no matter what content you're looking at.

Another new addition to the Z5 range is the fingerprint scanner which is located behind the sleep/wake button on the right hand side of the device. That position means that a press of the button to wake up the screen also reads your fingerprints - making for a convenient a secure way of unlocking your phone. In practise its easy to teach the device your fingerprint with a few taps of the button and the actual process of unlocking the screen is pretty much instantaneous.

Sony Mobile has made great strides in smartphone photography in recent years and that continues with the Z5 Premium. It sports a 23 megapixel camera with some of the most advanced technology on the market in terms of the lens and internal sensor. But what really sets it apart from other mobile shooters is the speed.

Sony says that this camera's autofocus can lock on in just 0.03 of a second - that's how long it takes the human eye to blink! And while we can't confirm a number that small, getting something in focus with the Premium is a doddle. Just tap and see the on screen notification, then press to take a picture, all in a fraction of a second. For even better results use the dedicated shutter button on the side - depress half way to focus as you would on a full camera then push all the way down to take a picture.

The camera app also launches almost instantly using this shutter button from any screen, meaning you'll never miss a shot again. Low light performance is strong thanks to the sensor technology and you can also record slow motion and 4K video - which can be played back manually on the massive screen.

There's a new look for the Premium, with our review model decked out in Chrome. What this means is that the rear of the device is basically an extremely shiny mirror which makes a stunning first impression. Better still, you can use it to check how you look if you're one of those people who like to take selfies with the rear-facing camera!

In our time so far we've had no performance problems with the handset thanks to the Octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor and 3 gigs of RAM. Sony has opted for a large 3430 mAh battery to power the huge screen and they promise two full days of battery life under average use. We tend to push our smartphones quite hard so with plenty of camera use, 4K video watching, 3G and Wi-Fi browsing, social media and some gaming the handset still managed to last a full day - something which is increasingly rare among large screen smartphones. And if you need it to last longer the STAMINA mode limits features to keep you going.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is a great-looking smartphone with top camera specs, a versatile fingerprint scanner and a ground breaking 4K screen and it's worth seeking out for those in the market for a 5.5 inch handset.
