Sky is to make its first foray into the broadcast of eSports with televised highlights of the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship being shown on Sky 2 tonight from 10pm.

The event saw teams and players compete for a share of around $500,000, spread across three games: League of Legends, Starcraft II: Legacy of the Void, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The tournament has wrapped up, so it’s not a huge commitment or risk for Sky to broadcast highlights. It will be interesting to see how viewing figures stack up considering the event is over and many fans would watch an event live via streams or catch up later on YouTube.

Sky isn’t the first major broadcaster to start looking at eSports. BBC Three covered the League of Legends Championship Quarter Finals from Wembley Arena and has dedicated some airtime to tutorials and documentaries, while ESPN has established its own eSports vertical, ESPN Esports.
