Mirror's Edge Catalyst is coming soon and the first proper gameplay footage is making the rounds today - check it out
It seems like everyone has been playing Mirror's Edge Catalyst, with previews dropping left and right from an early first look at the game at the DICE offices in Stockholm.
The game is a prequel/reboot of the first title which came out in 2008 and was totally brilliant and also pretty much ignored. It's about a character called Faith living in the shining future of the City of Glass who gets caught up in a conspiracy and has to go on the run. And that's something she's really good at, complete with plenty of parkour skills and no gunplay nonsense this time around.
We've had a number of trailers to date but this is the first time long stretches of gameplay have been released, check out IGN's capture of the first 12 minutes.
Those 'Runner Echos' are a lovely touch - not only do they look well but they're also a great way of teaching players how to interact with this world. And a huge improvement on the laboriously clunky handholding tutorial from the first game. Then again it has been eight years, so some improvements were to be expected.
Otherwise is looks like the controls have been streamlined a little, springboarding is a single long press rather than a double tap, and it's interesting to see a player who roundly ignores a lot of what the game is telling them to do. There's also a large chunk of story here, which seems to give Faith plenty of incentive to go on the run.
Basically it looks great.
Mirror's Edge Catalyst is out on PS4, Xbox One and PC from the 24th of May 2016. A closed beta has been announced for the 22nd of April.
