Samsonite is hoping to take one of the stresses out of travelling by letting you track your luggage via a beacon.

Samsonite is developing beacons for luggage, so that owners can track suitcases, which should ensure that they don’t get lost.

These beacons, and the accompanying Travlr app, will be available to European travellers by the end of the year. It’s unclear how much this peace of mind will cost with Samsonite only saying that the “premium technology” will be competitively priced.

Once you get a beacon, you’ll need to register your case with the free app. This then allows users to check the location of their suitcase within a distance of around 70m. It will then notify you if it’s coming closer or moving further away. That’s not much use if your case ends up heading for the wrong airport, but at least you’ll know if it’s about to hit the conveyer belt.

Samsonite will be building a community of sorts. Users are linked to one another and if another person happens to pass close to the lost suitcase and has Bluetooth enabled, the time and location is sent to the owner of the case. If the suitcase does go missing, the owner can flag it as missing from their phone.

Samsonite chief executive, Ramesh Tainwala, said, “Missing or permanently lost luggage is the nightmare of every traveller. As the world’s largest luggage manufacturer, we wanted to find a way to make this issue a thing of the past.”

In 2014, 24.1 million pieces of baggage were mishandled worldwide with 5.5% of them lost forever.
