The Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset is now shipping from its home in the United States, the future of entertainment is here
We have to admit to being pretty skeptical about virtual reality over the last few years, all starting with the Oculus Rift.
The Kickstarter for this device arrived in August 2012 and while it was all presented in a very slick fashion the idea of VR at the time mostly brought up the awkwardness of the 90s, when films like The Lawnmower Man conjured up a terrifying CG-enhanced vision of the technology. It all seemed too good to be true.
Well a lot can change in three and a half years, and the rest of the industry has been running to catch up with the lead Oculus has. We were never quite sure that this day would arrive but it has been confirmed that the first Oculus Rift headsets are actually shipping to real life customers who managed to place their pre order in time in January. Here's a look at one of the first boxes.

It's quite an achivement for the small company which managed to raise just under $2.5 million in capital and were later snapped up by Facebook for a staggering $2 billion. Facebook at least thinks the technology is here to stay but the real test will be what happens when consumers step into these worlds and start to give their honest opinions, while thousands of headsets start to throw up all kinds of technical issues.
By the end of 2016, the HTC Vive and PlayStation VR will also have joined the ranks of dedicated VR systems and there's a very good chance it could change the world. Or at least ensure a lot of people are wearing funny looking plastic helmets come Christmas.
The Oculus Rift is available to order now on the official site and costs €699 to Irish customers without shipping and taxes. It is also expected to arrive at retail in Ireland but there's no official word on release date.
