iPhone SE - specs pricing and release date
Apple surprised no one when they announced a new handset yesterday, the four inch iPhone SE, so what are you getting in this smaller package?
Apple's keynote event yesterday was highly anticipated and the company brought the goods with updates for Apple Watch focussing on health, a new iPad and the unveiling of iOS 9.3.
But the big news was the annoucement of an all new iPhone, something which the company has never done at a March event before. We've been hearing rumours about this new model for many weeks, so it's great to finally make the acquaintance of the iPhone SE.
The SE (which stands for Special Edition) is quite the turnaround for Apple as it features a four inch display. That's a return to the days of the iPhone 5, which is already a couple of generations in the past as the company looks to larger displays. But there's nothing retro about this device.
It's the most powerful 4 inch phone ever which uses the same A9 processor as the iPhone 6S. It features a 12 megapixel camera which no doubt has stunning performance as well as the ability to capture 4K videos and it also includes Live Photos. It may be small but it looks like Apple hasn't compromised on power.
The design is pretty familiar but looks a little slicker than before, with chamfered edges and a smooth aluminium body. This may be a slightly cheaper model but it will look just as premium as the rest of Apple's iPhone range.
That camera looks like a real winner, and Apple is promising you'll be able to edit 4K video right on the screen, which is quite an achievement. Live Photos add a touch of movement and sound to your snaps and the Facetime forward facing camera comess with its own flash, something that's increasingly popular in selfie cameras. TouchID makes a return, situated under the home button and fully compatible with Apple Pay - once we finally get it in Ireland.
And the iPhone SE will launch with the new iOS 9.3, bringing even more advanced apps and security, as well as new features which can actually help you sleep better!
The iPhone SE comes in four different colours - Silver, Gold, Space Grey and Rose Gold - and in 16 gig or 64 gig configurations. Pricing starts from $399 and pre-orders start on the 24th of March in select countries and the phone is out on the 31st of the month.
Irish folks will have to wait a little longer as the iPhone SE launches in an additional 46 countries in early April, including Ireland.
