Huawei revealed its next-generation quick charge technology, which is capable of charging a 3,000mAh battery to 48% in just five minutes.

Huawei says that this new technology is capable of charging compatible batteries up to 10 times faster than normal lithium-ion batteries. It uses a special charger coupled with a new lithium-ion battery with an energy density above 620 Wh/L.

Two videos were released to demo the technology. In the first, a small 600mAh battery is removed from a smartphone and placed in the charging cradle. It goes from practically empty to 68% in two minutes. The second video shows the larger 3,000mAh battery being charged.

To put this in relatable terms, an iPhone 6s, which uses a 1,715mAh battery, could theoretically be charged in under seven minutes.

Huawei says that it “is confident that this breakthrough in quick charging batteries will lead to a new revolution in electronic devices, especially with regard to mobile phones, electric vehicles, wearable devices, and mobile power supplies.”

“Soon, we will all be able to charge our batteries to full power in the time it takes to grab a coffee!”

Unfortunately, Huawei didn’t say how soon this could be.
