HTC Vive VR headset could cost $1500!
There's a rumour circulating that the pricing for the new HTC Vive VR system could be as much as one thousand five hundred dollars
Consumers were pretty shocked to learn that the Oculus Rift was priced at 600 quid, just wait til they get a load of the HTC Vive.
The other major virtual reality system set for launch in the first half of 2016, the Vive is a major partnership between tech types HTC and game makers Valve. And while we know pre order are open at the end of February for an April release the price has been kept under wraps for now.
A new report claims to have inside knowledge on the pricing for the system, and it could be as much as $1500. That figure comes from a Taiwanese website and comes as an estimate based on the hardware requirements of the Vive. It's a system which includes a cutting edge headset as well as wireless controllers and two base stations which create a 3D space which you can move around in.
Those elements make it more advanced than the Oculus Rift, which will ship with a simple Xbox One controller at launch and a single base station, so it's reasonable to assume the cost would be higher. It would also explain HTC's silence on the subject of price as they figure out how to reveal the information to consumers in the wake of the negative reaction to the cost of the Rift.
Bear in mind that users will have to also buy a powerful computer in order to run the demanding graphics for the Vive and it's easy to imagine the entire upgrade costing close to $3000. That's a big ask for consumers, and a real barrier to entry for the opening salvo of the virtual reality revolution.
This price is mere rumour for the moment, more as we get it.
