With Christmas behind us and some backlogs caught up on, or mammoth games like Metal Gear Solid V and Fallout 4 ticked off the to-play list, it’s time to look ahead at the games to come. The month has started slowly enough, but there are plenty of games coming in January to keep you entertained.

Amplitude

Release Date: 5 January

Platforms: PlayStation 4

Before Guitar Hero and Rock Band became synonymous with the rhythm genre of videogames, there was Amplitude. A successful Kickstarter campaign proved that the time was right for a re-release. The result is a challenging rhythm game that has you hopping between tracks to create the music and rack up points either in single player or against up to four players in multiplayer.

The Banner Saga

Release Date: 12 January

Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One

PC players have been raving about The Banner Saga, and now console players can delve into this Viking-themed tactical role-playing game. The Banner Saga sees players journey across a harsh environment, make difficult choices that have real consequences, and keep their crew safe in turn-based combat encounters.

Darkest Dungeon

Release Date: 19 January

Platforms: PC, Mac, PlayStation 4, PS Vita

If the word “roguelike” makes you sit up and pay attention, Darkest Dungeon will be right up your alley. In Darkest Dungeon, you’ll manage a roster of heroes who attempt to clear infested dungeons of monsters and other evils. But you’ll have to manage their health and wellbeing, equipment, and skills along the way. Darkest Dungeon has been in early access for the past year and updated and refined ahead of its final release. It’s out on PC first with a PS4 and PS Vita release to follow in Q2.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

Release Date: 28 January

Platforms: PC

Lara Croft’s adventure continues in Rise of the Tomb Raider as she grows into the ferocious and fearless heroine that we know. Rise of the Tomb Raider will take her all over the globe as she follows her late father’s research to the promise of immortality. But, of course, treacherous terrain and a dangerous organisation stand in her way. Rise of the Tomb Raider was released at the end of last year on Xbox One, but that exclusivity is slowly lapsing. PS4 owners will have to wait another few months though.

Lego Marvel’s Avengers

Release Date: 29 January

Platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, 3DS

If you’ve played a Lego game, you’ll have a fair idea of what to expect from Lego Marvel’s Avengers. The game will follow the plots of both The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron as well as Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’ll feature a playable roster of more than 200 characters and there are a staggering number of team-up moves available.
