Former NBA pro buys League of Legends team
Former NBA player Rick Fox has purchased League of Legends team Gravity Gaming for $1 million and rebranded it as Echo Fox.
Former professional basketball player Rick Fox has recognised that it's worthwhile getting in on this esports phenomenon and has bought League of Legends team Gravity Gaming for a cool $1 million.
Gravity Gaming has a hit and miss record; the team made the top six in League of Legends's 2015 spring and summer terms, but failed to qualify for the 2015 League of Legends World Championship. Since then, most of the team has cleared out, which leaves the new owner with some rebuilding to do.
Fox has no prior professional involvement in esports, but has shown an appreciated for the community and players. He has called professional players athletes while on The View, and has chatted about League of Legends with Utah Jazz player Gordon Haywood, who is active in the League of Legends scene.
ESPN reporter Darren Rovell revealed on Twitter that the team will be rebranded as Echo Fox. This rebranded team will be hoping to emulate its new owner's professional success; Fox has won three NBA titles with the LA Lakers.
