With names like Samsung, Sony, Oculus (owned by Facebook), Microsoft, and HTC getting involved in virtual or augmented reality, it seems like it should only be a matter of time before Apple dips its toes in that water. Its latest hire may indicate that something is in the works.

Apple has hired Virginia Tech computer science professor Doug Bowman, who is considered a leading expert on virtual and augmented reality. He was recently listed among grant winners for HoloLens research projects and appears to excel in creating 3D user interfaces for virtual and augmented reality experiences.

Apple previously acquired augmented reality firm Metaio, worked on a 360-degree experience in association with U2, and has filed iPhone-related headset patents. But it hasn't made any official virtual or augmented reality announcements just yet. It may only be a matter of time.
