Some Amazon users were unable to log into their account after the online retailer reportedly reset their passwords due to a possible security leak.

In an e-mail to affected users, Amazon said that there is "no reason" to believe that user credentials have been accessed by third parties. But it forced users to reset passwords to err on the side of caution.

"We recently discovered that your password may have been improperly stored on your device or transmitted to Amazon in a way that could potentially expose it to a third party," Amazon wrote. "We have corrected the issue to prevent this exposure."

The message was also sent to affected users’ account message centres on, and, which confirms that the message is genuine.

If you haven’t received the e-mail, but would also like to take the cautious approach, you should change your password now too. With online shopping season hitting its prime, it’s important to stay safe online.
